On Iranian roads: 1 million accidents and casualties every 2 years
Khabar Online: The rate of fatalities in auto accidents on Iranian roads (40 per 100,000 residents) are nearly four times global averages. Nearly 40% of all deaths in Iran are transportation-related. Last year alone, 620000 accidents resulted in 26000 deaths and 400,000 injured, 100,000 of them permanently disabled. The financial cost of the accidents are estimated at $5 billion every year.
Iran's infrastructure and roads are in poor condition despite improvements made in the decade after Islamic revolution. There are more than 3000 accident-prone spots in the country's road system, and nearly 4000 kilometers of roads are in critical need of repair or improvement. In recent years, lower income from oil exports, and higher expenditures on security and nuclear programs, have hampered growth in Iran's economic sectors, including transportation.
