Why do women's shirts have buttons on left?
Most people are right handed so buttons on the right side of their shirt make it easier for them to button up. Men's shirts follow this rule, but most women's shirts and clothing have buttons on the left side. Why?
One theory mentions historic reasons as the cause. Only a few hundred years ago, buttons were expensive items, and buttoned outfits for women had elaborate button designs. These luxurious outfits were afforded by wealthy women who often had servants help them button up or unbutton these elaborate outfits. Since most servants were right handed and facing the mistress, having buttons on the left side of the garment made more sense. And people followed traditions since then!
