English for Lovers!
Like most other English words, the word "dating" has several meanings depending on the context. In the context of relationships and romance, dating means: To go out and spend time with someone - in movies, dinners, etc. - without seriously committing to them. It's more serious than friendship (Doosti) but less serious than engagement (namzadi) or marriage (ezdevaj).
And then there's "blind dates." The first time I heard an American friend had a "blind date" I thought "He must be an honorable person because he can see but he has fallen in love with someone blind." Later I realized a blind date means "Going out with someone for the first time without having known them or even having seen them before." It's like your friend's wife has a single sister and he wants you (also single) to meet her for ice cream after work next week. Since you don't know her from before, or haven't seen her and don't even know how she looks, You can tell people "I am going on a blind date."
