Rita's Israeli-Persian peace concert in United Nations (Video)
On March 5, 2013, the United Nations General Assembly witnessed an unusual diplomatic achievement: a full-fledged UN-sponsored Farsi-Hebrew musical event full of goodwill and sympathy by the well known Iran-born Israeli diva Rita (Jahan-Foruz). The event (video below) was organized by UN Ambassador Prosor, who said in his introduction: "It is our sincere hope that this musical evening will echo from New York to the hearts and minds of people throughout Israel and Iran."
Ban Ki Moon opened the evening with the word "shalom" and described Rita as "a cultural ambassador". The popular Israeli singer gave a ten song rendition (after minute 16 in video) that included five songs in Farsi - including the popular "Gol Sangam" - , four in Hebrew and one -- "Time for Peace" -- in English. She delighted the audience with stories of her childhood in Tehran, about her mother's love for music, and about her own wish to spread the love far and wide between her birthplace (Iran) and her homeland. She praised the Persian language as beautiful, rich and dramatic.
Last year when Rita released an album entirely in Persian, naturally more than a few eyebrows were raised in Israel. Yet the peace-promoting album, "My Joys," sung in Farsi, became a great success in Israel and seems to also have generated a following in the underground music circuit in Iran at a time when tensions are high between the two countries.
Last November Rita also performed two bilingual concerts in Washington DC (link on event pages) and in Los Angeles (link on event pages).
