Controversy over Children of Ahmadinejad's Cultural Advisor
Cultural and Political News Blog
Mohammad Ali Ramin, Iran's former Media Deputy in the Islamic Culture and Guidance Ministry under President Ahmadinejad is known as an ultraconservative Islamist who banned several reformist publications and held an international conference attended by holocaust deniers in Iran in 2006.
In recent weeks, pictures of his children who have European residency, have become controversial. His daughter, Saliha Ramin, has started a fashion brand in Europe and models under the stage name Sali Ramin, without the Islamic dress and head cover she wore in Iran when appearing with her father.
Critics in Iran believe her fashion brand and lifestyle in Europe, are not only hypocritical, but also subsidized by her father's government connections in Iran.
Iranian actor Reza Kianian accused the Ramin family of hypocrisy and double standards. In response to Kianian, Saliha Ramin has issued a statement: "I could not choose where I was born or to which family or ideology but I made sure I chose my own path as soon as I was an adult."
Another controversy was related to Ramin's son, Yasin Ramin, who appeared in a picture, apparently taken in Germany, with his divorced wife actress Mahnaz Afshar who was not wearing the Islamic cover. Yasin Ramin was sentenced to seven years in prison for financial corruption in his business deals, but released early.
In the past, Mahnaz Afshar has been also criticized by Iranian nationalists after acting as a juror in a talent search show on Arabic network MBC, funded by Saudi investors, alongside singers EBi and Arash.
