In Pictures: A New Book, like Justin Trudeau, Reveals Grandpa Trump's Brothel

In 2018, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau appeared to hold back laughter at the G-7 summit when he presented Donald Trump with a framed photo of a hotel and brothel that Trump's grandfather once operated in British Columbia during the 19th century Gold Rush in Klondike, Yukon. Trump has since been critical of Trudeau as a "two-faced" person. Trudeau has treated Trump as a bully imposing new terms on Canada by modifications of historic US-Canadian agreements.
Now Andrea Bernstein's new book, American Oligarchs, examines how Trump's family and his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, have benefited from family connections and the influence of money in politics. The book explains how Donald Trump's grandfather, Friedrich Trump, emigrated from Germany in 1885, escaping inheritance laws and the Army, to America. He got work immediately as a barber but later transitioned to the hospitality business and ran a series of restaurants known as the Arctic Restaurant in Northwest Canada, serving Yukon Gold Rush travellers food, liquor and sex! Not very many people made money from the gold rush, but Friedrich Trump managed to escape the gold rush with a lot of money and bring it back east, which is how they started the Trump family real estate business and influenced politicians.
Separately, a new investigative podcast called "Trump Inc." by Andrea Bernstein of WNYC and Eric Umansky of ProPublica tries to answer basic questions about how Trump family businesses work and who might be profiting from his administration.
