From Tehran Taboo to Kiarostami's Last Film, Iranian Films at Vancouver International Film Festival 2017

This year The Vancouver International Film Festival (VIFF), held September 28 through October 13, 2017, is again host to several movies made in Iran or by Iranian filmmakers in diaspora.

Iranian Films featured at VIFF this year include:

"Tehran Taboo" by Ali Soozandeh

A youthful lust for life and taboo sexual adventure is at the heart of Iran-born, German-based Ali Soozandeh’s brash, animated combination of rotoscoped characters and drawn settings, some in 3D. The sex lives of a prostitute, a male musician, and two young women ingeniously intersect in a version of Tehran never before seen on screen. “This wily account of 20-something Iranians negotiating an assault course of laws and prohibitions to get their kicks fizzes with energy and bad behaviour.”--Screen

"No Date, No Signature" by Vahid Jalilvand

Forensic pathologist, Dr Nariman, a principled and virtuous man, has an accident with a motorcyclist and his family, and injures his 8-year-old son. He pays compensation to the man and offers to take the child to a clinic nearby. The next morning, he finds out that the same little boy has been brought in for an autopsy. Dr Nariman faces a dilemma now: is he responsible for the child’s death due to the accident or did he die of food poisoning according to other doctors' diagnostic?

"24 Frames" by Abbas Kiarostami

The late Abbas Kiarostami’s last film contains 24 four-and-a-half-minute segments, each inhabiting a fixed frame and depicting landscapes, animals, even a digitized reproduction of Bruegel’s The Hunters in the Snow. They also contain a haunting summation of the master’s life’s work that will have you seeing the world through new eyes. “A mesmeric glimpse into Kiarostami's mysterious mind… Gorgeous… Watching it is akin to opening a series of nesting dolls, or leafing through a book of dreams.”--Guardian

"Azar" by Mohammad Hamzei

First seen racing on a dusty motocross track, Azar (Niki Karimi) isn't exactly the conventional ideal wife, at least not in Iran. She's confident, capable and deeply committed to the fledgling pizzeria she runs with her husband, Amir (Hamidreza Azarang), but she's a little too progressive for some tastes. So when a terrible tragedy threatens the future of both Amir and the business, she ends up paying the price. Mohammad Hamzei’s debut is a deeply felt snapshot of gender inequality in contemporary Iran.
