Is wife of disgraced Anthony Weiner of Iranian-descent?
Under mounting pressure by media and political cohorts, U.S. Congressman Anthony Weiner finally decided to resign yesterday after he admitted sending images of his penis to women on the internet! Weiner's wife, Huma Abedin, is a Muslim of Pakistani but reportedly also of Iranian heritage, and among the most powerful American Muslim women in politics. For the past 15 years, Huma has been a close confidant to Hillary Clinton, U.S. Secretary of State, and now a Clinton's Deputy Chief of Staff and Aide. "Huma Abedin has the energy of a woman in her 20s, the confidence of a woman in her 30s, the experience of a woman in her 40s, and the grace of a woman in her 50s," Mrs. Clintonwrote in an email to Vogue Magazine which did Huma Abedin's photo shoot in July 2007.
Interestingly, Weiner and Abedin - now pregnant - were married less than a year ago by former President Bill Clinton, who is not a stranger to sexual scandals himself!
Unlike Weiner, some politicians caught lying about sexual scandals do not resign. Examples are Bill Clinton, Newt Gingrich (now a Presidential candidate from Republican Party) and David Vitter, a Republican Senator from Louisiana, known as a family-values conservative, but caught in relationship with several prostitutes (yet he ran for re-election and won!).
We decided to list some lessons learned in Weiner scandal here:
- When someone's last name is "Weiner" (in slang American, used for hot dogs and also penis!) they should be super careful about sending images of their private part on the Internet.
- Nobody is innocent and we're all prone to making mistakes and poor judgments. Lying egomaniac politicians, however, need to be wary of the diverse and free U.S. media. Even Arnold was caught after many years of hiding his infidelity and out-of-wedlock child. More power to U.S. media!
- While in Europe, people are less sensitive to sexual scandals among politicians, Americans still do demand family and moral values in politicians, enough to force some of the scandalous ones (like Weiner) to resign.
- As a blogger commented, we should not be too sorry for Huma or Hillary, or other spouses of disgraced politicians and businessmen. These women are often intelligent and ambitious, and "by choice" attracted more to their husbands' wealth and power, than their moral values like modesty and inner peace. Wealth and power is the centerpiece of attraction, so even scandals make famous couples wealthier: The publicity, book rights, speeches, TV careers, .... !
- (A cliche') Unfortunately, expensive, luxurious and high profile weddings, and fake smiles in pictures (see above) do not guarantee a happy married life.
- In fairness to disgraced politicians: Politics is the business of deceit, games, competition and risk taking. Politicians work long hours in this climate. Their professional lives outside home, would perhaps be better balanced at homes with spirituality, peace, modesty, and simplicity, and by supporting families and spouses who would not be as power-hungry, calculative or career-driven as the politicians, if not more! A working person needs to come home to a support structure balancing and neutralizing work-related contamination and poisons. Many politicians and businesspeople marry people who are like themselves, career-driven, stressed and mostly away from home! So over time, their at-home life and marriage become more of a mutually convenient and beneficial "business" partnership than peaceful co-habitation and a refuge from work.
