Afghanistan: Bold modernization of TV and Cinema
Afghanistan's Persian (Farsi) language TV and Cinema are leading the society in a transition away from extremism. Afghan Farsi TV productions such as Tolo may not be as educational or sophisticated as Iran's, but they seem less censored and are both entertaining and respectful of religion. As a result, many Afghan productions seem increasingly popular among Iranians and other Middle Easterners. From cooking and talent shows to Halal Eid concerts and female performances, Afghanistan may be leading the area in a balanced approach to modern entertainment for Islamic societies. Afghanistan has also been successful in the movie industry. Afghan Film Utopia, directed by Hassan Nazer, is selected as a nominee for Best Foreign Language Film at the 88th Academy Awards (The Oscars 2016).
