De Niro Opens Tribeca 2019; Festival Highlights Iranian Short & Cinema360
Entertainment Blog, Kodoom.com Editorial:
Many Iranian fans of Robert De Niro may know him for his movies and recent feud with Donald Trump but they may not know of his Tribeca Film Festival and Iranian movies this year. This year's Tribeca film festival offered a mix of "old and new"; "short and long" program offerings of special interest for Iranians and Iranian-Americans who love movies and technology.
The featured short film, "Driving Lessons" by Marziyeh Riahi, depicts a long-standing tension in Iranian society for the separation of men and women. According to Iranian law, Bahareh (Linda Kiani) must have her traditional, chauvinistic husband accompany her on driving lessons so she and her instructor will not be alone. The cast includes: Linda Kiani, Alireza Sanifar, Salar Khamseh, Sanaz Mesbah
Director and Producer of "Driving Lessons", Marziyeh Riahi is editor-in-chief of Short Film News, Asia’s first website specializing in short films and documentaries. She is a member of The Network For Promotion of Asian & Asia Pacific Cinema (NETPAC). At the 21 Kolkata International Film Festival, Riahi spoke about Asian cinema & especially Iranian cinema.
Always fresh and interesting, Tribeca is known for bringing cutting-edge technology to the world of film storytelling. This year is no exception with Tribeca's Cinema360 - a VR (virtual reality) immersive experience. Launched in 2018, Cinema360 is a relatively new addition to their Storyscapes and Virtual Arcade exhibitions. Once you don your gear (headset and microphone), you are immersed in the heart of the action. The "Space Buddies" and "Mr. Buddha" were especially captivating with a crew of mismatched astronauts and a gang of paranoid art thieves showing that working together isn’t always as simple as it sounds. The "Cinema360: Go Team" immersive experience is not for the faint of heart as it 'packs a punch' with intense scenes such as throwing up in your space helmet and gun violence. On this note, also featured was a platoon of embattled soldiers in "11.18.18", depicting life in the trenches during World War I. This experience ran longer in time than Space Buddies, and showed the shattering face of war for its combatants. We look forward next year to even more Cinema360 content with lighter and less cumbersome headgear options.
Now in its 18th year, The Tribeca Film Festival is a cultural event for the new age of storytelling that brings together visionaries across industries and diverse audiences. The Festival was founded by Robert De Niro, Jane Rosenthal and Craig Hatkoff to spur the economic and cultural revitalization of lower Manhattan following the attacks on the World Trade Center in 2001.
Home to the film festival events, Tribeca (from Triangle Below Canal Street) is a hip bustling neighborhood nestled in lower Manhattan with a backdrop of skyscrapers such as the rebuilt One World Trade Center and the jagged 56 Leonard Street.
