In Pictures: Farhadi, Panahi and Farahani push Iran to center stage in Cannes 2018
Independent Aggregator of Iran-related News/Events, Kodoom.com: Iran's political cinema was once again the center stage in Cannes Film Festival which opened this year with Farhadi's new film "Everybody Knows" featuring Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz.
The festival also highlighted "Three Faces" directed by reformist Jafar Panahi who is released from prison but banned from making films or leaving Iran to attend the festival. The film marks Panahi's first shot at the Palme d'Or; if he wins, he will have effectively scored the European film-festival equivalent of the Triple Crown. ("Taxi" won the Golden Bear at Berlin in 2015, while Panahi's "The Circle" took the Golden Lion at the 2000 Venice International Film Festival).
"Girls of the Sun," directed by Eva Husson and produced by Maneki Films, one of the three female directors in the Official Selection Cannes 2018, casts Iranian-born actress Golshifteh Farahani, the exiled feminist actress and activist who is blacklisted in her homeland Iran despite her popularity.
With Golshifteh's strong performance as Bahar, commander of the battalion of the Girls of the Sun in Kurdistan – who hope to liberate their town from extremist control – VOGUE is expecting the rising star to take home the Best Actress award.
In an interview with France's Le Monde, Farhadi avoids political issues but subtly attacks censorship in Iran by indicating that he and late Abbas Kiarostami both wished they were able to make films back in their homeland Iran.
In another interview with Washington Post, Farhadi criticizes Trump for violating the Iran Nuclear Deal and trying to undo anything Obama has achieved. Farhadi believes new sanctions will mainly hurt Iranian people and not the government.
