Iran's elite find new ways to show off: $50,000 Mobiles, $65,000 Rugs
Persian News Search Engine, Kodoom.com: Following several deadly accidents involving children of Iran's elite (news link), there was a ban placed on speed racing luxury cars in Tehran. So the wealthy soon found new ways to show off their incalculable purchasing power: Custom-made mobile phones and super premium Persian rugs.
According to Persian news source Aftab custom-made mobile phone brands like the leather-clad Vertu with steel frames and hand-adorned gems are easily fetching 160 million toomans ($300,000) from the rich.
Other Persian news sources (Hot News Cluster link) report a sudden surge in popularity of fine super premium Persian rugs that are sold for 200 million toomans ($65000). These signature rugs with 50+ knots and often around 6 square meters in size, are now demanding unrivaled prices, thanks to the ever increasing wealth of the rich, and their need to show off in new ways in a country that every home is adorned with fine woven Persian carpets.
Religious conservatives frown upon show offs and blame it on westernization of the society, but reformists and supporters of President Rohani's nuclear talks blame years of sanctions, isolation (from the West) and black market import-export mafia for the ever increasing income disparity in the Iranian society.
