Iranian filmmakers in Cannes 2013
Last month Anahita Ghazvinizadeh, a young Chicago-based Iranian-American filmmaker, won first prize (15,000 euros, or about $19,500) with "Needle" in Cannes 2013 Cinefondation short film competition. A sharp, nearly perfect 21-minute movie about a 6th-grade girl caught in a tug of war between divorced parents, “Needle” was shot last summer in Chicago.
This year's Cannes Film Festival also hosted several other films made by Iranian filmmakers: More Than Two Hours by Ali Asgari, Le Passe by Asghar Farhadi (in Competition section chaired by Steven Spielberg), Anonymous by Mohammad Rasoulof (in Un Certain Regard), and in Cinefondation section, Duet by Navid Danesh.
Both Danesh and Ghazvinizadeh are graduates of Karnameh, the prestigious and costly Iranian Film workshop founded by famed Director Abbas Kiarostami. Ghazvinizadeh who is now a graduate student in School of the Art Institute in Chicago, has made other shorts in the past: When the Kid Was a Kid (2011) (Vaghti Bacheh Bacheh bood) and Mourning (2011). She is also working on "Hanooz" (meaning "Still" in Persian) in post production.
