Independent Aggregator of Iran-related News/Events, Kodoom.com: Every year Vancouver, Canada is host to some of the best cinema from around the world. This year The Vancouver International Film Festival (VIFF), held September 27 through October 12, is again host to movies made by prominent filmmakers about Iran or the Middle East, highlighting the lives of people living and dying in the region.
As in past years, VIFF has chosen Kodoom.com as a media and publicity partner for the Persian speaking community. A limited number of specially priced tickets for select movies are available on Kodoom.com and outlined below:
Jafar Panahi's 3 Faces
Despite the ban imposed upon him by the Iranian authorities, Jafar Panahi continues to find ways to make masterful films. His latest is a deceptively simple tale wherein he and actress Behnaz Jafari--both playing themselves--travel to a remote village to investigate the veracity of a video Panahi received, in which a teenage girl with show-business dreams seems to kill herself. Limited number of specially priced tickets available HERE.
Hat Trick by Ramtin Lavafi
Best Actress, Best Screenplay, Fajr 18
After a leaving a fancy party, two young, quibbling couples strike something in the road with their car. Afraid to investigate, they take off to one of their homes to discuss what to do. Thus the stage is set for Ramtin Lavafi’s disquisition on the Iranian middle class and its moral bankruptcy. As the four discuss and argue through the night, secrets come out and lives are changed forever. Limited number of specially priced tickets available HERE.
Golden Eye Winner of Cannes 2018, Samouni Road by Stefano Savona
This forceful documentary shows the aftermath for the surviving clan members after the massacre of the Samouni family as seen through the eyes of 14-year-old Amal Samouni. Interspersing animation and a reconstruction of the massacre with a consideration of daily life, this is an unforgettable work. Limited number of specially priced tickets available HERE.
Everybody Knows (Spanish: Todos lo saben) is Asghar Farhadi's Spanish psychological thriller. Nominated for Cannes 2018 Palme d'Or and starring Penélope Cruz, Javier Bardem.
The sun-dappled "Everybody Knows", which takes place in Spain and is Farhadi’s second film to be made outside of Iran (the first was 2013’s Paris-set The Past), has all of the qualities and hallmarks we have come to expect from this world-class filmmaker. Making the most of a powerhouse cast, Farhadi weaves a convoluted web of mistrust and deceit. When Laura (Cruz) returns to her native Spain for her sister’s wedding, leaving her husband Alejandro (Darín) back in Argentina to search for work (the first of many lies to come), she is reunited with a longtime family friend (Bardem)—a bristly man with whom she was once romantically involved. As if this tense situation wasn’t fraught enough, Farhadi adds wood to the fire: Laura’s daughter suddenly vanishes from the wedding reception and is nowhere to be found. Limited number of specially priced tickets available HERE.
