Iranians showcased at Vancouver International Film Festival, From Farhadi to Golshifteh and Namjoo
This year, the 35th annual Vancouver International Film Festival (VIFF) presents a Panorama stream which invites viewers to experience a dizzying spectrum of world cinema including many award winning films from Iran. Films range from Oscar winning Asghar Farhadi’s “The Salesman” (Foroushandeh) to the ambitious examination of Iran’s disenfranchised youth in “Lantouri.”
In Radio Dream, Persian alternative musician, Mohsen Namjoo, stars as Hamid Royani, cultural standard-bearer at San Francisco’s Farsi-language radio station who endeavours to keep his culture alive, fostering the transmission of Persian/Afghan art and lore through radio.
Exiled Iranian actress Golshifteh Farahani acts in Jim Jarmusch's "Paterson," as wife of Adam Driver, a bus driver and poet named Paterson in the city of Paterson, New Jersey, which was home to the poet William Carlos Williams.
In Sonita by Rokhsareh Ghaem Maghami (Iran/Germany/Switzerland), a 14-year-old Afghan refugee in Iran aspires to be a hip-hop superstar like Rihanna. Inversion (Varoonegi) by Behnam Behzadi (Iran), a tribute to Iranian women’s courage, is set in a Tehran choking on smog.
Other Iran or Persian related films showcased in this year's festival are: Window Horses (The Poetic Persian Epiphany of Rosie Ming) by Ann Marie Fleming (Canada), and Under the Shadow by (Iranian) Babak Anvari (UK/Jordan/Qatar). Scenes from Iran are also featured in "Ski, Skate, Ride" in which Jordan Manley discusses his film "A Skier’s Journey" shot in the steeps of China and Iran.
As in previous years, VIFF has chosen Kodoom.com as a media and publicity partner for the Persian speaking community. VIFF runs from from September 29 – October 14 at various venues in Vancouver. Visit Kodoom.com or Vancouver International Film Festival websites for more information.
