Hollywood Reporter- As part of its effort to increase diversity among its ranks, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences recently issued a record 683 invitations to new members. The new list, in reaction to widespread criticism of racism and sexism in Hollywood, heavily favors women (46 percent), people of color and minorities (41 percent) and includes three Iranian-born film makers: Abbas Kiarostami (Certified Copy, Taste of Cherry), New York City-based Ramin Bahrani (99 Homes, At Any Price) and Paris-based Marjane Satrapi (The Voices, Persepolis).

The new honor came a little too late for famed Iranian director Abbas Kiarostami who shortly after his long-awaited nomination to the Academy died of colon cancer.
