LERD by Rasoulof wins Cannes 2017 Un Certain Regard award
Independent Aggregator of Iran-related News/Events, Kodoom.com: The formerly-imprisoned reformist Iranian filmmaker Mohammad Rasoulof, has won the Cannes 2017 Un Certain Regard award for his film LERD, A Man of Integrity. The film is about a man working on a goldfish farm in northern Iran who faces corrupt ties between local leaders and businessmen. The award was presented by Uma Thurman.
Rasoulof was sentenced in 2010 to 6 years in prison for making a documentary with another jailed filmmaker Jafar Panahi about green reformists protesting the disputed 2009 re-election of President Ahmadinejad. Rasoulof was also banned for making films for 20 years, but the sentence was reduced to one year on appeal.
Rasoulof is currently free on bail, and awaiting the prison sentence to be carried out.
Rasoulof has won other awards. Goodbye (Be omid-e didar) won the directing award at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival in the section Un Certain Regard.
His film Manuscripts Don't Burn, about reformist authors and activists assassinated by Iran's Intelligence officers in the 1980s and 1990s, was also screened in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival where it won the FIPRESCI Prize. None of his films have been released in Iran.
In 2013, Rasoulof also won the Silver Medallion Award at Telluride Film festival.
