Miss Canada 2011 veiled in Iranian media

Last month, when Tara Teng became Miss Canada 2011, several websites inside Iran showed a veiled picture of her (below) and commented: "unlike other beauty pageants, Teng is not seen half-naked ... She is more interested in inner beauty" implying that the veiled picture is an indication of Teng's preference for modesty and covering her hair.
But was anything different with Teng or this year's Miss Canada contest?
It is true that Miss British Columbia contest (where Teng was selected from) departs from the traditional pageant format as it has replaced the swimsuit competition with a parade of the contestants in sportswear. The young women donned everything from soccer and hockey gear to boxing gloves, and instead of showing sculpted bodies and skin, showed off some athletic moves to the crowd.
But when it comes to clothing, images published from Teng, such as the one below, show her not in veil or Hijab, but sometimes in low cut dresses.
Although Teng does not seem interested in a veil or Islamic Hijab, she does seem to be modest: "Physical beauty will wrinkle and tarnish over time, but legacy inspires the next generation. .. Beautiful girls are a dime a dozen. It’s nothing to boast over!" Teng says. She is also admired for her activism in humanitarian causes and in fighting human trafficking and slavery. "Slavery still exists in every country in the world, and the total profit from human trafficking is second only to the drug trade," Teng said. Women’s issues, poverty, and issues of social justice are also high on her agenda (video below).
So it is not Teng's veil, as shown in Iranian media, that brings her accolades, but her modesty and humanitarian outlook and unselfish activism.
Note: The Miss Canada contest is different than the more commercial and global Miss Universe Canada, which had three Iranian Canadians among its finalists this year.
