Neshat, Golshifteh, Kiarostami and Panahi in International film festivals
Hollywood Reporter has recently published stories about two major international film festivals in 2013, which will host Iranian film makers or actors, on the jury or as contestants:
Asian Film Awards in Hong Kong
“Over the past six years, the Asian Film Awards have helped to give global exposure to films and talents from our part of the world,” says Wilfred Wong, chairman of Hong Kong International Film Festival. “Our Awards have encouraged understanding between different cultures, and brought together the film industries of our region.” Perhaps best representing that spirit of pan-Asian collaboration and understanding, Abbas Kiarostami was on Wednesday nominated as Best Director for his film Like Someone in Love, a Japan-France-Iran co-production.
Golshifteh Farahani is in the running for a Best Actress award for her role in The Patience Stone from Afghani writer-director Atiq Rahimi from Afghanistan.
BERLIN 2013: Shirin Neshat on Competition Jury
Iranian director Shirin Neshat (director of Women Without Men), Oscar-winning American actor and activist Tim Robbins, cinematographer Ellen Kuras (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind), acclaimed Danish filmmaker Susanne Bier (In a Better World), German director Andreas Dresen, and Greek producer and director Athina Rachel Tsangari (Attenberg) are among the group that will chose the winners of this year's Berlin International Film Festival.
Asia, often in focus in Berlin, is represented by a single competition title, Nobody's Daughter Haewon from Korean auteur Hong Sangsoo (In Another Country), while Iranian cinema will get pride of place thanks to Closed Curtain, the new film directed by Jafar Panahi, who is still under house arrest in Tehran, and co-director Kambozia Partovi.
