Nine Iranian among new members of the Oscars
Independent Aggregator of Iran-related News/Events, Kodoom.com: The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) have invited 774 new members to join the Oscars organization from 57 countries, including Iran with 9 invitees: Golshifteh Farahani, Haydeh Safiari, Leila Hatami, Nazanin Boniadi, Rakhshan Bani Etemad, Bahman Ghobadi, Mohammad Rasoulof, Mohammad Reza Delpak, and Mohsen Mousavi. Several of the Iranian nominees are either exiled or blacklisted inside Iran. The late Abbas Kiarostami was on last year's list of international invitees.
The 2017 list includes 39% female and 30% people of color, both numbers increasing overall totals in those categories which has been a recent focus of AMPAS, with a new overall female membership of 28% and colored of 13%.
Deadline believes the new diverse list of nominees is the Academy's effort to becoming the "United Nations of cinema."
