Airing of an episode of Pat & Mat, a popular stop-motion clay animation series, in Iran's holy city of Qom has caused headaches for local TV officials, according to Iranian news agencies.
IRIB (Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting) has reprimanded local station officials in Qom for airing a Pat & Mat episode in which the clumsy but cute duo demonstrate home brewing and fermentation of an alcoholic beverage.
Although public sales and consumption of alcohol are strictly banned in Islam and Iran, with a per capita alcohol consumption of 1 liter per year, Iran ranks third in the middle east after Lebanon and Turkey in alcohol consumption. Many Iranians are poisoned or killed by bootlegged or denatured alcohol. The rich consume pricey name brands imported illegally or distributed by powerful mafia.
