Tehran's first ever Rockabilly concert sells out!
Persian News Search Engine, Kodoom.com: Parsineh, Asre Iran and other domestic Iranian sources have reported unprecedented sell out crowds at Iran's first ever Country Rock/folk rock/Rockabilly style Western music concert, thanks in part to a marginally more liberal atmosphere after President Rohani's election.
For many years, Iranian fans of certain types of music concerts had to travel abroad. For example, last summer many Iranians traveled to Turkey - also a majority Muslim country - to attend a concert by Roger Waters - founder of the progressive rock band Pink Floyd. Most Western genres of music are not tolerated by Iran's hardcore religious groups, militia, and clerics. The now-exiled Iranian director Bahman Ghobadi captured the theme of "underground" Iranian music in his award-winning movie "No one knows about Persian Cats" (list of screening and details here).
But on January 23, in a rare occurrence, Iranian music group Tondar (meaning "Thunder" in English) founded by guitarist Ardavan Anzabipour performed Iran's first ever "authorized" country rock music concert in fluent English to sell out crowds in 4 back-to-back events.
The mixed-gender band performed works from Garth Brooks - accompanied by Mandolin and violin- followed by Sting's "Shape of my heart" written by Luc Besson, "Diamonds and Rust" originally by Joan Baez, and others. Interestingly, the concert ended also with another work by Garth Brooks, "Beer Run," in an Islamic country that forbids drinking and alcohol!
