Culture and Entertainment News Blog:
Internationally known for creating a uniquely haunting and beautiful (sonic) vocal language imbued with a sense of ritual and the unknown, Sussan Deyhim will be performing "La Belle et La Bête" (Beauty and the Beast) on Thursday, January 16, 2020 at the majestic Irvine Barclay Theatre. Sussan will also sing a program of classic love tunes and popular songs from the 1950s and 1960s Iran, as well as her own original compositions.
Born in Iran, Sussan Deyhim joined Iran’s national ballet company at the age of 13. She then traveled to Europe and joined the Bejart Ballet in 1976. In Europe she continued her training in music, theater, and dance. Since 1980, Sussan has been in the United States continuing her work as a composer, performance artist and activist, with the Los Angeles Times proclaiming her as “One of Iran’s most potent voices in exile.” Over the years, Sussan has collaborated with many leading artists, including Peter Gabriel, Branford Marsalis, U2, Bobby McFerrin, Shirin Neshat, Sophie Calle, Richard Horowitz, Rufus Wainwright, Jerry Garcia, Skip McDonald and Talvin Singh. Her vocals can be heard on numerous movie soundtracks, including the Oscar-nominated movies Argo, The Kite Runner and Any Given Sunday.
The special night at the Irvine Barclay will feature songs from La Belle et La Bête, which is her most recent recording project. Sussan will be accompanied by a stellar jazz trio, including composer and multi-instrumentalist Richard Horowitz, a Golden Globe Award winner.
