Young Street Peddlers from Iran Become Stars of Venice Film Festival

This year the Venice Film Festival's MARCELLO MASTROIANNI AWARD for Best Young Actor or Actress was awarded to Rouhollah Zamani for role in the Iranian film KHORSHID (SUN CHILDREN). Zamani along with Shamila Shirzad (pictured above) are real-life child laborers and street peddlers in Tehran who were cast into the award winning film by Director Majid Majidi.
In a video message from Tehran, Zamani who could not personally attend the festival because he was tested positive for for coronavirus, thanked the Jury and Director Majidi for shedding some light on the plight of child laborers and poverty.
“The Sun” narrates the contrast between the world of children and adults which is clearly shown by the children and the path they are about to take to become grown-ups. The story also depicts the lack of education and repressive attitudes that deprive these children of some form of childhood.
Oscar-nominated Iranian filmmaker Majid Majidi is known for his narratives about children and his latest has been heralded as one of his best. Sun Children follows a group of friends working to support their families who are drawn into a hunt for hidden treasure.
Shamila Shirzad who plays a key role in the movie along with her brother Abolfazl Shirzad, is from an Afghan family who have sought asylum in Iran. She had tears in her eyes in Fajr International Film Festival during her speech about poverty and her mother's sacrifices for the family.
