A Simple Guide to How Your Brain and Body Communicate, Balance or Burn Out
Book Review, Culture and Science Blog
Watching the tragic story of Googoosh (his recent interview) or the sad saga of Amber Heard and Johnny Depp, one would wonder what is the underlying mechanism of various disorders and diseases (like addiction, depression, anxiety, diabetes, weight gain, dementia, sleep disorders, blood pressure, constipation, and infertility) which are plaguing many people, rich and poor, Iranians and Americans alike? Why do several countries like Japan and UK now even have Ministries of Loneliness to keep the social fabrics from falling apart? Why is it so hard to trust anyone? Why is it so hard to kick bad habits? Why do so many people try to get ahead in life through deception (masks), drugs and addictive tools (crutches) and backstabbing (daggers)? And why so many humans end up in dead ends and ruts in life, work or relationships?
If like us you are also not familiar with how your body and mind work, a recently published book Masks, Crutches, and Daggers: The Science of our Self-delusional, Addictive Homo economicus Brain, currently on Amazon's Hot New Releases in Evolutionary Psychology, can help you understand how your body and brain communicate and balance each other or burn each other out.
The book is written in simple language and draws from several disciplines: neuroscience, evolution, biochemistry, psychology, economics, physics, philosophy, nutrition, and even mysticism. It quotes Rumi and other Persian mystics too. The author personally translates mystics quotes and poems from Persian to English.
The book is like a user manual and practical guide to how our body and brain balance each other through feedback loops controlled by several chemicals called hormones and neurotransmitters. It explains how various diseases are caused by broken feedback loops and why these loops break so often and become self-reinforcing (addictive). Here is the Table of Contents as shared on twitter:
The author, an accomplished polymath (interdisciplinary scientist, philosopher, educator, entrepreneur) and former NASA grantee starts the book by explaining how he paused his lucrative corporate career after a visit to the iconic Frank Sinatra’s house in Palm Springs. He shares many other examples and stories from the pop culture to augment his theories. The author is praised on the book cover for his independent mind and critical thinking skills by Ted McDonald, aka "Barefoot Ted," spiritual naturalist, entrepreneur and 21K ultra-marathoner who has been featured in C. McDougall's best-seller book and film Born to Run.
There are few books in the market that can help us understand in simple language the complex nature of our body and brain, and the root of our diseases. This book is one of them and it costs less than one good dinner! We highly recommend it and gave it a 5-star rating on Amazon.
