Cancer-causing Asbestos Used in Baby Powder, And Manufacturer Knew it for Decades
The Baby powder brand by Johnson & Johnson is as popular among Iranians as among other nations, but now documents examined by Reuters show that talc-based baby powder made by health products giant Johnson & Johnson (J&J) has been tainted with carcinogenic asbestos and the company kept that information from regulators and the public for decades. In 1976, as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) was weighing limits on asbestos in cosmetic talc products, J&J assured the regulator that no asbestos was “detected in any sample” of talc produced between December 1972 and October 1973. It didn’t tell the agency that at least three tests by three different labs from 1972 to 1975 had found asbestos in its talc
Johnson & Johnson has insisted "Our talc is safe" but in December Johnson & Johnson lost its motion to reverse a jury verdict that awarded $4.69 billion to women who blamed their ovarian cancer on asbestos in the company’s baby powder and other talc products. The $4.14 billion in punitive damages and $550 million in compensatory damages, together one of the largest personal injury awards on record, was upheld by Judge Rex Burlison in a circuit court in Missouri. The plaintiffs — 22 women and their families — were the first to go to court against Johnson & Johnson claiming that their ovarian cancer was linked to asbestos contamination in the company’s talc.
The company’s stock has plunged by more than 10 percent since November and has struggled to recover since, wiping off some $40 billion in market capitalization.
During the 1970s, most manufacturers stopped using talcum powder in their baby powders after researchers discovered that some talc deposits also contained asbestos fibers. Talcum powder (talc) has been linked to an increased risk of ovarian cancer for more than 30 years. The mineral is used in numerous consumer applications – from plastics and paints to pharmaceutical drugs, cosmetics and some foods. Talc is a common additive to (non organic) animal feeds, along with fertilizers and pesticides.
