Deaths from Suicide, Alcohol, Drugs and Gun Violence A National Crisis in America
According to a 2019 Scorecard on State Health System Performance published by The Commonwealth Fund, the rise in deaths from suicide, alcohol, and drug overdose has reached a national crisis in the United States.
The Commonwealth Fund’s 2019 Scorecard on State Health System Performance reveals that most states are losing ground on key measures related to life expectancy as premature deaths from suicide, alcohol, and drug overdose continue to increase. Most alarming, in some states residents now face shorter life expectancies than just a few years ago, in part because of unrelenting increases in deaths linked to suicide, alcohol, and drug overdose.
West Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania, the District of Columbia, Kentucky, Delaware, and New Hampshire stand out as having the highest death rates from drug overdoses. West Virginia and Ohio have been hard hit by the opioid epidemic.
The Scorecard also found that health care costs are placing an increasing financial burden on families across the United States. Democrat-leaning states such as Hawaii, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Washington, Connecticut, and Vermont are the top-ranked states in healthcare coverage according to the Scorecard, which assesses all 50 states and the District of Columbia on 47 measures of access to health care, quality of care, service use and costs of care, health outcomes, and income-based health care disparities. The mainly Republican states of Mississippi, Oklahoma, Texas, Nevada and Arkansas are the lowest ranked according to the Scorecard.
Separately, gun violence is now also a leading cause of premature death in the U.S. Guns kill more than 38,000 people (including 22000 suicides) and cause nearly 85,000 injuries each year.
