Extensive Deforestation in Northern Iran Caused by Logging, Disease and Farming
Independent Aggregator of News/Events, Kodoom.com: The head of Iran's forestry services has warned that Chestnut and Beech trees are expected to be completely extinct in Hyrcanian mixed forests in Northern Iran within the next 30 years.
Hadi Kia Daliri has lamented about a purely commercial outlook on Iranian forests which has resulted in extensive logging and removal of non-wood producing species. He also blames the large number of tourists visiting, littering and damaging the Hyrcanian forests, which are critical for ecological balance between the biome and wildlife such as Persian tigers and wolves.
Kia Daliri believes extensive deforestation and invasion of farmlands, caused by widespread poverty in the region, will ultimately lead to destruction of the Hyrcanian forests.
Registered by UNESCO, the Caspian Hyrcanian Mixed Forests ecoregion, in the temperate broadleaf and mixed forests biome, is an area of lush lowland and montane forests covering about 55,000 square kilometres near the southern shores of the Caspian Sea of Iran and Azerbaijan. The forest is named after the ancient region of Hyrcania.
