First Iranian-American woman elected to National Academy of Sciences
Independent Persian News Search Engine, Kodoom.com: Iranian-born Maryam Mirzakhani, a Professor of Mathematics at Stanford University, has been elected to National Academy of Sciences. She will be one of only 2,291 scientists honored with the membership, which is a widely accepted mark of excellence in science and considered one of the highest honors that a scientist can receive.
In 2014, Mirzakhani, a graduate of Iran's Sharif Technical University, became the first ever female winner of the prestigious Fields medal.
Interestingly, math was not Mirzakhani's favorite topic in her childhood and even throughout high school. It was in college that she developed a passion for mathematics after learning more about math's great potential in solving practical problems.
