In Pictures and Videos: Unprecedented Floods Paralyze Parts of Iran
Independent Aggregator of Iran-related Events/News, Kodoom.com: It appears that as Iranians celebrate their New Year (Nowruz) their country is now a new victim to the extreme impacts of global warming. At least 25 of Iranian Provinces have received unprecedented rain or snowfalls leading to floods of historic proportions. In the City of Shiraz alone flood has claimed 19 lives.
Amateur videos show some 200 vehicles being washed away near the famous Quran Gate entrance to the city of Shiraz. The city's historic Vakil Bazaar is also reported as inundated.
Shiraz is the namesake of the internationally well known wine and home to some of Iran's best known flower gardens and romantic spiritual poets.
Separately, in the northern green and lush provinces of Gulestan and Mazandaran several cities are still mostly covered under water with no electricity or drinking water.
In the Province of Lorestan in Western Iran, a village near Boyrahmad was fully buried under a flood-triggered mudslide but all residents were able to flee ahead of the incident.
In the capital city of Tehran, Kabob and Tea houses as well as other attractions in the scenic mountainous resort area north of the city have been ordered to shut down for the next 48 hours with heavy rain in the forecast.
Army units have been dispatched to some of the flood impacted areas.
Update on April 1: MPs from the Lorestan cities of Poldokhtar and Dorood have issued urgent pleas to President Rouhani and VP Jahangiri to send helicopters to rescue people: "No electricity, drinking water, heating gas, connecting roads or phone services are available in villages isolated by floods. Thousands awaiting on rooftops may drown soon if airborne help does not arrive."
