Independent News Bulletin: Coronavirus May Infect 30% of Iranians, Military Put in Charge
Health, Science and Society News Blog, Kodoom.com:
Iran now ranks in the top three countries worldwide in terms of coronavirus infections. Officially, at least 10,000 Iranians are infected with the virus, but an investigative article on The Atlantic estimates the actual numbers to be closer to 2 million. The following are excerpts from Kodoom.com's independent news aggregator robot on this topic:
- The list of Iranian officials sick or dead by coronavirus has now grown into a large list including two Ministers, several MPs such as Fatemeh Rahbar, and Advisors to Iran's Supreme Leader and President Rouhani. According to the Head of Flu Epidemic Committee in Iran, an estimated 30-40% of population may become infected by coronavirus within a month.
- Due to sanctions imposed by Donald Trump, many Iranian hospital workers are lacking protective gear and subjected to infection by coronavirus. At least 10 nurses and doctors have died so far of coronavirus.
Medical staff who died of coronavirus
- Iran's Civil Defense Chief has indicated that coronavirus shares many traits with biological warfare. Separately, Iraq's Shia militia leader Moqtada Al-Sadr has accused Trump of masterminding the coronavirus.
- MP Motahari blames superstitious religious authorities for the spread of virus, "those who stopped Quarantine of Qom will be responsible for death of Iranians."
- The streets of Tehran have been sprayed against coronavirus, including the longest one stretching from North to south for 18 kilometers, the Vali Asr (formerly Pahlavi) avenue. Some spray guns were jammed.
- Thanks to the social distancing caused by coronavirus, the air quality in Tehran is now suitable for breathing. The congested overcrowded capital is now calmer and cleaner nowadays. This is rare given the often dangerous levels of air pollution in the city.
- Not all Iranian cities are on alert. For example, residents of Sanandaj are ignoring coronavirus warnings and celebrating Nowruz (Persian Spring equinox, New year festivities). Many people are still buying exposed bulk food items in public bazaars.
- Health authorities have warned that trash divers may spread coronavirus in Tehran. Many of the homeless and poor residents of Tehran rely on trash (dumpster) diving to feed their families.
- Tehran's main mountain passes to Northern cities (Caspian shores) were shut down to millions of Tehran residents to prevent spread of coronavirus. Both Tehran and Northern country have high rates of coronavirus infection.
