Iranian American astronaut Jasmin Moghbeli talks to CNN's Amanpour
Independent hub for Iran-related News/Events, Kodoom.com: Iranian American Yasmin (Jasmin) Moghbeli, the first ever female NASA astronaut trainee of middle Eastern origin, chosen from a list of more than 18,300 applicants, talked to CNN's Christian Amanpour, herself an Iranian American.
Moghbeli says it's important "kids see that there are people of different backgrounds...and it's something they can do too."
The Iranian-American Jasmin Moghbeli, 33 is a Major in U.S. Marine Corps and considers Baldwin, New York, her hometown. She earned a bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering with information technology at MIT, followed by a master’s degree in aerospace engineering from the Naval Postgraduate School. She also is a distinguished graduate of the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School. Moghbeli currently tests H-1 helicopters and serves as the quality assurance and avionics officer for Marine Operational Test and Evaluation Squadron 1 in Yuma, Arizona.
In August, Moghbeli and other astronaut candidates will begin two years of training at NASA. Then they could be assigned to any of a variety of missions, including: performing research on the International Space Station, launching from American soil on spacecraft built by commercial companies, and departing for deep space missions on NASA’s new Orion spacecraft and Space Launch System rocket.
Jasmin's Iranian parents, Fereshteh and Kami, live in Florida and her brother Kaveh resides in Pennsylvania. She will report for duty in August 2017.
