Iranian-American first woman ever to win prestigious Fields Math award
Persian news search engine, Kodoom.com: The International Mathematical Union (IMU) has announced that Iranian-born Maryam Mirzakhani, a Professor of Mathematics at Stanford University, is the first ever female winner of Fields medal, considered the highest honor in mathematics.
Mirzakhani, a graduate of Iran's prestigious Sharif Technical University, is one of the four young medallists - three others are men- who have been selected in 2014 for their contributions to topics ranging from dynamical systems to the geometry of numbers and the solution of equations of the type that describe many physical phenomena.
Interestingly, math was not Mirzakhani's favorite topic in her childhood and even throughout high school. It was in college that she developed a passion for mathematics after learning more about math's great potential in solving practical problems.
