Iranian-American Wins 2026 Abacus Medal (English and Persian Videos)
Iranian-American Shayan Oveis Gharan has won 2026 Abacus Medal. The International Mathematical Union's Abacus Medal is a prestigious quadrennial (every four years) honor—sometimes considered a counterpart to the Fields Medal—awarded to a computer scientist under the age of 40 for landmark, ground-breaking contributions to the mathematical aspects of information sciences and the theory of algorithms, such as Shayan Oveis Gharan's work advancing theory of algorithms, leading to a deeper understanding of spanning trees and matroid bases and improving the approximation of the metric traveling salesperson problem, and Markov Chain Monte Carlo sampling.
Like millions of Iranians in diaspora, Shayan has chosen life outside Iran due to socioeconomic and political conditions inside Islamic Republic of Iran even though he is an observant Muslim from a religious family and his wife wears Hijab (head scarf).
Born in 1986 in Isfahan, Iran, into an academically driven family where his mother encouraged math and his brother gifted him the book How to Count Without Counting, Oveis Gharan grew up celebrating Persian traditions like Nowruz, earned an Informatics Olympiad gold medal as a teenager, and later completed his bachelor's degree at Tehran's Sharif University of Technology before moving to the United States for his Ph.D. at Stanford University and a faculty career at the University of Washington.
