Leading Causes of Death in America and Iran (1)
Society, Health and Science, Economy, Politics Blog, Kodoom.com Editorial:
In the aftermath of the mass shootings of Texas (racism/hate crime related) and Ohio last week that resulted in at least 32 fatalities, it may be appropriate to look at overall causes of death in the United States and Iran and the financial cost associated with them:
Part 1: Leading Causes of Death in the US
The average daily number of people dying in the United States by cause:
- 1800 from heart disease or heart attack, mainly affecting ages 35 and over, now on the rise
- 1700 from cancer (called malignant neoplasms on CDC website), especially affecting age ranges of less than 14 and over 35.
- 500 from accidents (called unintentional injury on CDC website), number one cause for ages 44 and younger
- 450 from Lung diseases (mostly smoking related), prominent cause of death in ages 55 and over
- 400 from strokes, called cerebro-vascular on CDC website, in mostly 65 and over age group
- 300-400 from "unintentional poisoning" which could include medical malpractice and at least half from drug overdose such as opioid overdose, a crisis-level epidemic in America, now mainly affecting ages 15-65
- 330 from Alzheimer's in mostly 65 and over age group
- 250 from alcohol-related causes: An estimated 88,000 people (approximately 62,000 men and 26,000 women) die from alcohol-related causes annually, making alcohol among the leading causes of death in the United States. This partly includes the 100 people who die every year from liver diseases, often caused by alcohol or chemicals/pharmaceutical/toxin overload: Between 1999 and 2016, deaths from cirrhosis increased by 65%, from about 20,600 in 1999 to nearly 34,200 in 2016. In 2014, alcohol-impaired driving fatalities also accounted for 9,967 deaths (31 percent of overall driving fatalities). In addition, some 700,000 college students between the ages of 18 and 24 are assaulted or injured every year by another student who has been drinking.
- 230 from Diabetes, caused partly by poor environmental, lifestyle and dietary choices, moving up in many age groups as a leading cause of death, now among top six in ages 45 and over
- 150 from influenza (flu) or pneumonia, mostly affecting older age groups
- 140 from kidney disease (nephritis), , in mostly 65 and over age group
- 125 from suicide, half by firearms (guns) becoming a crisis in certain groups such as military veterans and age range of 15-65
- 100 from Motor vehicle accidents, called unintentional motor vehicle (MV) traffic on CDC website, affecting ALL age groups almost uniformly. About a third of these were related to alcohol-impaired drivers and 21% to drowsy sleep-deprived drivers responsible for some 200 crashes a day in the US.
- 100 from unintentional falls (falling accidents)
- 40 from homicide by firearms (gun violence), now mainly affecting the age group of 15-55
...
- 0.2 from foreign agent Terrorism. According to a report by Cato Institute more Americans die on average every year in animal attacks than in Terrorist attacks, even if the unprecedented loss of life on September 11 is included.
