Independent Aggregator of Iran-related News/Events, kodoom.com:
According to Iranian news sources, and Dolphin Project (a non-profit charitable organization, dedicated to the welfare and protection of dolphins worldwide), one of the two captive dolphins being held at Tehran Milad Tower has died. Mehrad Mohseni, the Natural Environments Deputy at Tehran's Environmental Protection Agency has accused the Dolphinarium of hiding the death for at least a week and of not having a veterinarian on staff. He indicates the male Dolphin, Cassia, is now depressed after loss of his female partner and playmate, Alpha.
Mohseni further accuses the water park in Milad Tower of trading seals and dolphins with countries like Ukraine and Turkey without proper care which has resulted in death of at least two seals and a dolphin.
Many countries have banned the exploitation of dolphins and seals in unnatural habitats such as water parks but several parks in Iran continue to offer such entertainment. Sepehr Salimi, an animal rights activist in Iran, lamenting the exploitation of animals in captivity, believes abuse and neglect in zoos and animal parks are widespread and under reported by authorities.
