This Living Organism Survived 24000 Frozen Years and Can Now Still Reproduce!
Health and Science Blog, Kodoom.com
According to research published on Current Biology, Bdelloid Rotifers, microscopic worm-like invertebrates (about 0.5 mm long), have been revived from a frozen state buried in Siberian permafrost radiocarbon-dated to 24000 years ago. The multicellular worms not only survived but can still reproduce parthenogenetically (asexually as female-only).
Previously, Bdelloid rotifers were known for their ability to survive extremely low temperatures. They had been reported to survive 6-10 years when frozen between minus 20 and 0 degrees Celsius.
