US Congresswoman Calls Persian Sangak Her Favorite Bread!
Health and Science Blog, Kodoom.com Editorial:
In an interesting tweet, US Congresswoman Katie Porter has called Persian bread Sangak as her favorite bread that she misses: "People often ask me what food I miss most when I’m in DC. It’s a tough choice, but the hot sangak bread from Wholesome Choice is a top contender. Whenever I’m back in OC, I always try to stop by—there’s just nothing like it!"
Sangak or pebble bread, is an Iranian whole wheat leavened flatbread. Because of its high fiber and sourdough basis (allows breaking down of sugars) Sangak is considered a healthy bread recommended for patients with diabetes, high cholesterol, cardiovascular disease, family history of gastric cancer, and people with weight problem.
In Persian sangak means little stone. The bread is baked on a bed of super hot small river stones in an oven. It is mentioned for the first time in the 11th century. Each soldier carried a small quantity of pebbles which at camp were brought together to create the "sangak oven" that would bake the bread for the entire army. It was eaten with Kabobs.
Congresswoman Katherine Moore Porter, who grew up in a small farming community in Iowa, is an a law professor, attorney and politician from the Democratic Party, serving as the U.S. Representative for California's 45th congressional district, which covers much of south-central Orange County, home to many Iranian Americans.
According to American Banker, "Rep. Katie Porter is less recognizable nationally than other progressive Democrats elected to the House in 2018. But among watchers of the Financial Services Committee, she has become perhaps the fiercest disruptor in Congress since Elizabeth Warren."
