We Used This Biometric Service to Track Our Personalized INNER Age and Health
Health and Science Editorial, Kodoom.com
We now know when it comes to diet, lifestyles and health, one size does not fit all. Although individualized medicine is not yet fully available or affordable to most of us, we can now use services that correlate biometric data with advances in genetics, aging and nutrition to offer us personalized lifestyle and nutritional recommendations. We test-drove one of these biometric services. InsideTracker, founded by top experts in aging, genetics and biometric data, offers personalized lifestyle, nutrition or supplement recommendations based on a blood test and/or your DNA analysis. Our goal was to achieving a younger “Inner” metabolic age which is often different than our chronological (birth) age. That is why we sometimes meet people older than us that look and act younger than us!
Here is a small sample of what some of our team members learned after their blood and DNA analysis by InsideTracker. To see a complete list of possibilities, you can check for yourself HERE. In fact, they happen now to be offering their best promotion of the year (30% OFF) for the holidays (with promotion code OFF30K).
InnerAge calculation:
Getting younger as we age is no longer reserved for fictional characters like Benjamin Button! InsideTracker allows us to calculate our “InnerAge” alongside our chronological age by evaluating the biomarkers closely associated with aging, such as Calcium levels (marker for bone and mineral health upon aging), Testosterone levels (male marker of muscle building and strength retention upon aging), LDL cholesterol (correlating with energy metabolism and heart health upon aging), White blood cell types (such as Basophils and Lymphocytes, all markers of overactivity of our immune response to pathogens and stressors), hsCRP (high sensitivity C-reactive protein, a good marker for overall inflammation in the body), Glucose and HbA1c (markers for blood sugar and various inflammaging factors).
Your InnerAge can be older or younger than your chronological age. The improved Innerage calculation formula has identified additional biomarkers that improve the accuracy of determining your “InnerAge”, so instead of just 5 markers, they now analyze 14 biomarkers for females and 18 biomarkers for males. With each marker, there is a hyperlinked description chart and another link to your actual blood test results together with nutritional and lifestyle recommendations.
Note:
One of our male team members had low testosterone levels and high sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) levels both markers of aging according to InsideTracker. However, this person has been practicing intermittent fasting and long-term calorie restriction (CR) such as 16 hour fasting each day, which is shown to be associated with a marked increase in SHBG, low serum total and free testosterone as well as reduced risk of cancer (in mammals) and extended lifespan in many species, including yeast, worms, flies, spiders, fishes, and rodents. So if you are practicing caloric restrictions, just note that more studies are needed to elucidate whether CR-mediated reduction in sex hormones has beneficial or detrimental effects in modulating aging and the pathogenesis of age-associated chronic diseases such as cancer.
Cholesterol:
There is still much confusion about the role of cholesterol in healthy living. The mere mention of cholesterol signals to most people a negative reaction. However, more education is needed to understand the role of cholesterol which is indeed an essential part of maintaining cellular health and wellness by making and supporting cell membranes. These membranes are layers that protect the contents of the cell by acting as the gatekeeper to what things can enter or leave the cell. Cholesterol is made by the liver and is also used by the liver to make bile, which helps us digest food. Cholesterol is also needed to make certain hormones and to produce vitamin D. Our liver makes enough cholesterol to meet our body’s needs for these important functions.
InsideTracker measures Total Cholesterol as follows: HDL: High Density Lipids (known as “good” cholesterol), LDL: Low Density Lipids (known as “bad” cholesterol) and Triglycerides (known as “bad cholesterol). Based on LDL, HDL, TG and Total cholesterol, InsideTracker assigns your personalized risk factor and offers helpful lifestyle and nutritional recommendations.
Those who are more curious, can calculate their own VLDL - very low density lipid proteins - the particles that carry triglycerides known to accumulate inside our arteries, narrow them and ultimately modulate heart problems such as atherosclerosis. Eventually deposits form plaques and may rupture causing a blood clot. To estimate VLDL-C, divide the triglyceride value by 5 if the value is in mg/dL or divide by 2.2 if the value is in mmol/L. In most cases, this formula provides a good estimate of VLDL-C.
Also, please note the ratio of Triglycerides to HDL-Cholesterol (TG/HDL-c) is an atherogenic index that has been shown in some studies to be a highly significant independent predictor of myocardial infarction and extensive Coronary disease, even stronger than TC/HDL-c (3 or less being optimal) and LDL-c/HDL-c ratios. An ideal TG/HDL-c ration should be close or less than one.
Your DNA and Blood Test:
InsideTracker also has the technology to combine your DNA and blood test results to provide a customized report on the known biomarkers for aspects such as the immune system, cholesterol, weight, sleep, sensitivities/allergies and athletic performance. You may have your DNA tested with InsideTracker OR upload your results from 23andMe or Ancestry. For example, one of our team members, after uploading her DNA profile, learned that she had an elevated risk of gaining extra weight based upon the gene variant rs1421085.
Excellent Blogs:
InsideTracker also provides a variety of great ways to view your results (graph and table formats) and to get started on achieving your goals with weblinks and even a few yummy recipes like a “nutty, chocolate granola bar.” They also offer well researched scientific blogs such as this one about Supplements that Support Immunity Against Respiratory Infections Like COVID-19.
