World Cup: Headache for Tehran's Coffee shops
Just days after headaches for Iran's Brazilian host and its beer company sponsor (see story link), now Tehran's popular mixed-gender coffee shops are facing a dilemma about the World Cup: To Air or Not to Air Iran's World Cup matches on big screen TV? What if Iran wins a match and there is a jovial atmosphere and mixed-gender party and celebrations defying the theocratic codes of modesty?
According to Iran's ISNA, the President of Tehran's Coffee Shop Association wants to censor Iran's state-run TV in coffee shops during the World Cup to avoid headaches by "Morality Police" for coffee shops in case young Iranians party too much while watching Iran's games and possible victory.
Even Iran's national football team players are subject to Iran's strict security and religious guidelines. According to Farda News, the Team was allowed yesterday to take a short recess but only indoors in a Brazilian shopping mall. No footballer or staff was allowed to roam the streets or leave the shopping mall. The team was returned to their camp escorted by Brazil's security through traffic-jammed streets.
