Explore the Amish Lifestyle in Pennsylvania Countryside
Entertainment and Travel Blog, Kodoom.com Editorial:
Nature and culture loving Iranian Americans living in the Northeast US may not be aware that nestled in bucolic Lancaster County, Pennsylvania and within only a 1.5-2 hour drive from cities like Philadelphia and New York is a place and a people known as the Amish. The Amish, pronounced "aa·muhsh", are a group of traditional Christian church members of Anabaptist origins who left Europe and settled in Pennsylvania in the early 18th century to escape persecution and lead a "plain" life. They were part of Pennsylvania's founder, William Penn's "holy experiment" in religious tolerance in the late 17th century. Today, the Amish continue to lead a simple existence relying on each other in their community for support and fellowship.
While each group of Amish are different and follow their own "ordnung" or rules, many Amish eschew modern conveniences, such as telephones and cars - preferring instead to ride around town in a horse and buggy because they believe without telephones and cars families and communities will be forced to stay closer to each other. As a general rule, as long as the modern technologies such as telephones, mobiles and computers do not interfere with family life, they will use them to live, work and communicate.
The clothing for Amish is simple and modest, with serviceable black coveralls for men and black dresses for women. Most Amish women cover their hair with a small white cap and men can be seen wearing straw hats and once married, grow a beard. While farming is the Amish main source of family income and work, today, the Amish thrive in many cottage industries such as farm equipment, carpentry and wood-working, and entertainment and restaurants catering to tourists that come from all over the world.
