Famed Iranian musician found NOT Guilty of having a female vocalist in his band
Iranian News Search Engine, Kodoom.com: Majid Derakhshani, famed Iranian Tar player and composer (left in picture above), was found not guilty by Iran's Revolutionary Court of using a solo female vocalist (Mahieh Mohammadkhani) in his ensemble "Mah Banoo" (Moon Lady). Derakhshani's former band, Mah (Moon) used several female vocalists but mainly performed outside Iran. After his exoneration, Derakhshani and his band are now allowed to travel outside Iran but the future of their concerts and albums inside Iran is still uncertain.
Iran's theocratic rules are ambiguous on prohibition of public performances by female vocalists, and President Rohani's moderate Minister of Culture and Islamic Guidance has allowed performances by bands using female vocalists. But hardcore Islamist pressure groups have often prevented such concerts from actually taking place.
Mah Banoo's female vocalist Mahdieh Mohammkhani is in fact now touring North America with another classical Persian music ensemble, Dastan (Link in event pages).
