First Female Muslim Imam Leads Mosque Prayers in Denmark
Kristeligt Dagblad: Sherin Khankan is the first female muslim Imam in Denmark to lead the women-only prayers in the newly established Mariam mosque, an alternative to the male-dominated practice among Muslim communities. Khankan - who has a Muslim Syrian father and a Christian Finnish mother- wears modest outfit but no face or hair covers. Despite potential threats, she seems determined to broaden Islam’s appeal to her fellow countrywomen.

As reported in The Telegraph, Khankan is confident that her project will ease the barriers between traditional Islam and a more modern rendition of the faith that can better relate to young worshipers: "Many imams in this country belong to the traditional school which does not account for the culture we live in. Instead, they help to construct contradictions between being a practicing Muslim and a young person in Denmark. But you can love and honour several cultures and influences at once without betraying one or the other camp."
