Iranian composer among Jurors of Canada's 2017 Juno Music Awards
Independent Aggregator of Iran-related News/Events, Kodoom.com: Iranian musician, orchestra conductor, pianist and composer Maziar Heidari was a member of the jury at the Canada's 2017 JUNO Awards. During the 46th annual JUNO Awards, televised on CTV from The Canadian Tire Centre yesterday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Sophie Grégoire-Trudeau celebrated the life of Leonard Cohen. The JUNO Awards was hosted by Bryan Adams and Russell Peters with performers including Arkells, Alessia Cara, Billy Talent, Dallas Smith, July Talk, Ruth B, Sarah McLachlan, Shawn Mendes, The Strumbellas, A Tribe Called Red and a special tribute to Leonard Cohen by Feist. The late Leonard Cohen won the Artist of the Year category; his son Adam accepted the award on his behalf at the gala. The Tragically Hip won Rock Album of the Year for their album Man Machine Poem.
The JUNO Awards evolved from an industry awards event to a weeklong festival that travels city to city across the country. It encompasses both public-facing fan events and industry/networking opportunities featuring a diverse array of Canadian artists and emerging talent.
In January, Heidari composed “Concert for peace,” with four fellow Iranian-Canadian Composers of Toronto collective, featuring well-known works by Mozart, Vaughan Williams and Samuel Barber, as well as Toronto-based, Ottawa-raised soprano Miriam Khalil singing in English, French, Farsi and Arabic. The work was rooted in an almost 800-year-old poem called Children of Adam by the Persian medieval poet Saadi. When translated, the poem includes the lines:
Human beings are members of a whole
In creation of one essence and soul.
If one member is afflicted with pain
Other members uneasy will remain.
If you have no sympathy for human pain
The name of human you cannot retain.
“I love that. That’s the way we want to live, right? That’s the basis of this concert,” says the chamber orchestra’s director, Kevin Mallon.
