Spectacular Shahnameh-based Epic Cinematic Shadow Theater: Last US Performance coming to New York
On September 7-8, New York city will witness the last US performance of "Feathers of Fire" an epic cinematic shadow theater based on Shahnameh (The Persian Book of Kings).
"Feathers of Fire: A Persian Epic" is a breathtaking cinemascope-size shadow play (in English) based on the action-packed magical tale of Zaul and Rudabeh, star-crossed lovers, who triumph against all odds then give birth to the most important mythological hero of Shahnameh – Rostam. This family-friendly show is sure to entertain children and adults alike with its enchanting characters and visually stunning imagery. Famed Hollywood director, Francis Ford Coppola, refers to the play as "One of the greatest epics of all time and my favorite "Shahnameh" brought to life in a spectacular fashion by Hamid Rahmanian with shadow puppets design and cinematic wizardry."
The visually awe-inspiring cinematic shadow play, directed by Hamid Rahmanian, a 2014 Guggenheim fellowship-winning visual artist, derived from the visual tradition of the region, will be rendered as puppets, costumes, masks, scenography and digital animation, all of which will come to life in a “live animation” shadow casting technique perfected by shadow master Larry Reed on a cinema-size screen, employing 160 Puppets, 138 Animated background, 15 Masks and 8 Performers.
The play unfolds an action-packed magical tale of star-crossed lovers from the 10th-century Persian epic Shahnameh (‘The Book of Kings’), Zaul and Rudabeh, who triumph at the end against all odds. The play also features an original score by the acclaimed musical team, Loga Ramin Torkian & Azam Ali. Feathers of Fire had its world premiere at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in 2016.
There are limited number of tickets still available for the last three scheduled shows in New York (link).
KCET (Community Television of Southern California) calls the show jaw-dropping: "Lovers beset by obstacles! Sea faring ships and sea dragons! And an epic battle to save ancient Persia! This might look like the next big-budget animated Disney movie but would you believe you're watching live theatre? The play is called "Feathers of Fire" and the visuals are jaw-dropping. The technique is called shadow theater and the tradition is as old as humankind."
