Large iconic statutes disappear from Tehran's main centers
Several Iranian News agencies report a sudden wave of "statute thefts" in Tehran. Many believe poor economic conditions and the high price of bronze used in the iconic statutes prompt the thefts. But some of the artists who created the iconic statutes are suspect that dislodging and theft of these heavy objects (some weighing 1000 pounds) from places visible to security forces, is perpetrated by the military police or supporters of the hardliner Iranian government. Most of the disappeared statutes embodied "liberal" or "nationalist" historic icons and not "religious" characters.
