Iran's Industrial Minister: Imported Russian freight cars will roll into Iran only over my dead body!
Translation from Independent Persian News Search Engine, Kodoom.com: Iran's Minister of Industry, Mohammad Reza Nemat Zadeh, discussing in a "Resistance Economy" convention, has pointed out difficulties in privatization of Iranian businesses, such as a huge debt accrued by Arak Train Wagons, currently possessed by The Defense Ministry. Nemat Zadeh also criticized a recent large order placed with Russia to import 5000 (sub-standard) freight train wagons (railcars): "In objection, I have clearly stated these wagons have to run over my body on the tracks to be able to roll into Iran."
Russia's Sputnik News had reported in February that Russian manufacturer Uralvagonzavod will supply Iran with 5,000 freight cars, marking the start of Russian exports to the country after the removal of anti-Tehran sanctions. According to Kommersant, Russia's state development bank, Vnesheconombank (VEB) will provide a loan of 11.2 bln rubles ($140 mln) to Uralvagonzavod to cover costs.
The cars will be developed for use by Iranian Railways, the paper reported. The deliveries are expected to begin before the end of 2016. The agreement reportedly comes as part of VEB’s plans to subsidize export contracts for the supply of 15,000 rail cars of different types to Iran, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Egypt and Cuba.
