Update on Protests: Iranian Officials Defy Trump's Threat
Updated as of 5 PM EST on January 2, 2026:
- Reports of more injuries and death across Iran despite Trump's pledge to help Iranian protesters if they are hurt or killed! At least 10 protesters and two IRGC riot police reportedly killed in clashes. Women, young and working class are active in protests despite violent crack down.

- Despite Trump's support pledge, Iranian protesters are unarmed. Only in Marvdasht, there are reports of attack on a police barrack, unclear if weapons were seized. Iranian artist Hichkas shares images of 10 protesters killed by IRGC and riot police. IRGC opens fire on protesters and mourners in Marvdasht. Other than Hichkas (rapper), several other Iranian sports figures, scholars and university students and artists support protesters.
- Iranian regime officials and bloggers mock Trump for offering help to Iranian protesters. One blogger (Asma Khajeh Zadeh) says "Trump is always tough talk and empty postures!" Ghalibaf, Rezaei and Larijani pledge destruction of American bases in the region if US intervenes to protect protester.
- Internet down in parts of Iran. Government blocks Jewelers' Bank accounts. Numerous protesters arrested.
- Israeli journalist Emily Schrader reports explosion and smoke in W. Tehran
- Father of young man killed in protests says his son was NOT part of IRGC militia
- Pezeshkian: People don't want this government! Polls show how unpopular we are!

- Sitting Protesters in different cities refuse to move as police forces arrive. Some police forces refuse to harm protesters.

- Protesters, including many women, attack government offices in Fasa, Ezna and Marvdasht. Unconfirmed reports of weapons depot attacked by protesters, some carrying guns. At least 37 killed or injured in these cities.
- Banks, mosques, Friday Imam offices and Islamic Judiciary offices attacked by protesters. Stores set on fire in Mashhad. Raisi statue in Ardabil down
- Flights temporarily suspended from Tehran airport
- Natural gas flow to Tehran may be rationed
