Women, Minorities Win US Elections But Environmental Issues Still Lag
News Blog by Kodoom.com: Last week, Democrat women, including several Iranian Americans, Muslims and immigrants, blew a defeat to President Trump's party in federal, state and local elections across the US particularly among women (59%), younger under 45 (61%) and college educated voters (53%) as seen in the video below. Even in the race for US Senate, Democrat candidates received 14 million more votes than Republicans although the Senate electoral process resulted in a net loss of seats for Democrats.
Some Democrat candidates also ran on climate change and won, such as Sean Casten who flipped a Republican stronghold - Illinois's 6th Congressional District.
Groups like 350 Action mobilized progressive voters and got some climate champions elected to hold what they call "fossil-fueled politicians" accountable. Another environmental group, Clean Water Action, has announced that Clean Water-endorsed candidates in 14 of the 15 targeted districts won their races.
But the outcome of environmental ballot initiatives to curb global warming was mixed. Ballot measures to curb climate change failed in Western states of Arizona, Colorado and Washington, but environmental advocates did see victories in Florida and Nevada.
In Arizona, voters said no to accelerating the shift to renewable energy. In Colorado, they said no to an effort to sharply limit drilling on nonfederal land. And a measure to make Washington the first state to tax carbon emissions appears to have fallen short.
But there were bright spots for environmentalists.
California put into law a commitment to produce 100 percent of its electricity from carbon-free sources by 2045. 11 Democratic candidates for governor vowed to try to get all of their respective states' electricity from clean energy sources by the middle of the century, according to surveys done by the state affiliates of the League of Conservation Voters. Several of those candidates, including Jared Polis in Colorado, won their races.
Climate campaigners also had a victory in the Sunshine State. Florida voters, perhaps with the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill still fresh in mind, overwhelmingly decided to amend the state’s constitution to ban offshore oil and gas drilling in state waters.
