Iranian American Women in the 119th US Congress

There are two Congresswomen with Iranian heritage in the 119th US Congress:

Yassamin Ansari, Democrat from Arizona's 3rd congressional district was first elected in 2024 and became the first Iranian-American Democrat in Congress. Ansari was born in Seattle, Washington and raised in Scottsdale, Arizona by parents who immigrated to the United States from Iran. Ansari has advocated for climate action, LGBTQ rights and release of Epstein's client list.

Stephanie Bice, Republican from Oklahoma's 5th congressional district, was first elected in 2020 and became the first American of Iranian and Pakistani descent to serve in Congress. Bice was born in Oklahoma City to a Dutch-American mother, Paula Sue Vanhooser and a half Iranian and half Pakistani father, Hosein "Joe" Asady who came to California from Zahedan, Iran, via Karachi, Pakistan, at a young age to study computer science. Bice voted to provide Israel with military support following 2023 Hamas attack on Israel and was also a cosponsor of The Internet Reach and Access Now Act (IRAN Act), which mandates that the Secretary of State’s duties permanently include implementing and regularly updating a comprehensive strategy to promote internet freedom in Iran.
